Best season
Oroklini Lake is a seasonal wetland - the best time for birdwatching is from October to April, when migratory birds like the Black-winged Stilt and Spur-winged Lapwing stop over. In summer the lake often dries up, so fewer birds are present.
Best time of day
Early morning hours (just after sunrise) offer the greatest bird activity - many species forage in the mud. Late afternoon before sunset is also good, as birds return to their roosting sites.
Etiquette
Keep sufficient distance from birds to avoid startling them - use binoculars or a telephoto lens. Dogs are not allowed in the protected area, and entering the shoreline zones outside marked paths is prohibited.
What to bring
Binoculars with 8-10x magnification are essential for good bird observation along the lakeshore. Waterproof shoes or rubber boots are recommended as the ground around the lake is often damp and muddy.
Getting there
Oroklini Lake is about 5 km northwest of Larnaca, near the A3 highway. From the parking area on the main road, a short dirt path leads to a viewing point. Public transport: bus to Oroklini and then 1 km on foot.

Birds can be shy and retreat quickly at movement - remain still and wait a few minutes for them to reappear. On windy days birds are often less active - choose a calm morning for your visit.
