Karpas Peninsula (Cyprus)

Weather…

The Karpas Peninsula, often called the 'panhandle' of Cyprus, extends for about 80 kilometers in a northeasterly direction into the Levantine Sea. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, dense scrubland, and some of the most pristine sandy beaches in the Mediterranean, most notably Golden Beach. Geologically, the peninsula is composed of sandstone and limestone, featuring unique coastal formations shaped by marine erosion. Historically, the region served as a strategic outpost and is dotted with ancient ruins and Byzantine churches, with the Monastery of Apostolos Andreas at its tip being a major pilgrimage site. Today, the peninsula is a designated national park, famous for its population of feral donkeys and as a critical nesting ground for green and loggerhead sea turtles. Its remote location has helped preserve its traditional rural character and biodiversity against large-scale development. Culturally, it remains significant as it hosts one of the last remaining Greek Cypriot enclaves in the northern part of the island.
