Boca de Yumurí
Boca de Yumurí is a secluded and easy on the eye spot located in the Guantánamo province, at the far eastern tip of Cuba. This small, rustic fishing village sits exactly where the Yumurí River empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The main attraction is the dramatic Yumurí Canyon, boasting sheer limestone walls that reach up to 200 meters high. It's an off-the-beaten-path destination convenient for adventurous travelers seeking untouched landscapes and tranquility. The area is an ecological paradise, well-suited for boat trips up the river, hiking through the dense tropical forest, and swimming in natural freshwater pools. The local flora and fauna are incredibly diverse, featuring endemic snails and a variety of bird species. The culinary offerings are simple but incredibly fresh, revolving around locally caught fish, lobster, and traditional accompaniments like plantains and black beans, served in modest, family-run paladares. Getting to Boca de Yumurí is part of the adventure. It is most commonly accessed via the memorable La Farola coastal road from Baracoa, which is about 30 kilometers away. Renting a scooter, taking a taxi, or joining a guided tour from Baracoa are the best options. The good time to visit is during the drier season between December and May to ensure the river is clear and the hiking trails are safe and accessible.
