Pico Cristal is one of the most prominent elevations in eastern Cuba, forming the centerpiece of the Sierra de Cristal in the Holguín province. Rising to 1,231 meters above sea level, it is one of the island's highest peaks. The region holds great ecological significance and is home to the Pico Cristal National Park, established in 1930 as Cuba's first national park. The relief is defined by steep slopes and plateaus covered in dense pine forests (Pinus cubensis), which represent a unique high-mountain vegetation type in the Caribbean. Geologically, the massif consists primarily of igneous and metamorphic rocks, resulting in a high concentration of minerals and metals in the soil. The remote nature of the summit has helped preserve many endemic species, including rare orchids and ferns. Today, Pico Cristal is a vital area for scientific research and conservation efforts aimed at protecting the fragile ecosystem from the impacts of climate change.
