A distinctive landmark is the bronze statue 'La Giraldilla' atop the watchtower, which serves as the symbol of Havana and depicts the wife of a governor waiting for her husband's return. Despite its strategic location, the fort was militarily flawed due to its distance from the harbor entrance, leading to the later construction of Castillo del Morro. Today, the building houses a maritime museum featuring ship models and treasures from sunken galleons. Since 1982, the fortress has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Old Havana.
