Qinghai Lake (China)

Weather…

Qinghai Lake, also known by its Mongolian name Koko Nor, is the largest lake in China and a prominent endorheic salt lake located on the Tibetan Plateau. Situated at an elevation of 3,205 meters in Qinghai Province, it was formed within a structural depression caused by tectonic activity. The surrounding landscape features expansive grasslands and high mountain ranges, which burst into color with rapeseed flowers during the summer months. The lake is a critical habitat for migratory birds, with Bird Island on its western shore serving as a globally significant nesting site. It holds deep religious significance for Tibetan Buddhists, who often perform pilgrimages around its perimeter. Despite its high salinity and cold climate, the lake supports unique fauna, such as the naked carp (Huangyu). Every year, the region hosts the Tour of Qinghai Lake, one of the most challenging high-altitude cycling races in the world.
