Goz Beïda is the capital of the Sila region in southeastern Chad, located in close proximity to the border with the Sudanese region of Darfur. The city was designated as the administrative seat of the newly created region in 2008 and has since undergone rapid, albeit difficult, development. Geographically, Goz Beïda is situated in a savanna landscape that is frequently flooded by numerous wadis during the rainy season, often making access difficult. The town gained prominence primarily as a center for international humanitarian aid, hosting tens of thousands of refugees from Sudan and internally displaced Chadians in camps such as Djabal. The population has grown significantly due to these migration movements, posing enormous challenges to local infrastructure and natural resources like water and firewood. The climate is seasonally humid with a distinct rainy season from June to September. Goz Beïda is a focal point for regional security and a symbol of solidarity, yet also reflects the fragility of living conditions in the border region. The economy is heavily shaped by the presence of international organizations and cross-border trade.
