The Paoua Forest extends across the northwestern region of the Central African Republic within the Ouham-Pendé prefecture. This area represents an ecological transition zone between the dense rainforests of the south and the drier wooded savannas of the north. Historically, the region is renowned for its fertile soils, which established Paoua as a significant agricultural center, particularly for cotton cultivation, as early as the 1960s. The forest itself consists of a mosaic of gallery forests along watercourses and sparser dry woodlands that host specific flora and fauna. Geographically, the area is situated on a high plateau of the Yadé Massif, with elevations frequently exceeding 600 meters. Climatic conditions are defined by a distinct dry season from November to March, followed by an intense rainy season that revitalizes the ecosystem. In recent decades, the Paoua Forest has been impacted by human settlement activities and agricultural expansion, leading to the fragmentation of natural habitats. Nevertheless, it remains a crucial sanctuary for migratory wildlife species and an essential resource for the local population, who utilize the forest for non-timber products and fuel wood.
