Cavendish
Cavendish gained global recognition primarily as the setting for Lucy Maud Montgomery's famous novel, "Anne of Green Gables." The community lies in the heart of Prince Edward Island National Park and, alongside its literary heritage, serves as the island's most prominent summer resort. Visitors are drawn to the historic farmhouses, iconic red sand beaches, and extensive dune systems. The most important landmark is the Green Gables Heritage Place, where the farm that inspired the novel is preserved in its original state. Along the coastline, the Cavendish Dunelands trail runs past dramatic red sandstone cliffs and sand dunes, offering excellent hiking opportunities. The area also has four championship golf courses, which provide a serious challenge due to the constant coastal winds. The menus of local restaurants are dominated by Prince Edward Island blue mussels, fresh lobster, and Atlantic salmon, served in casual seaside bistros. Cavendish is located just a 40-minute drive from Charlottetown, making it easily accessible from the capital as a day trip or as a base for a longer vacation. The tourist season is highly concentrated: most services, museums, and restaurants are only open from late June to early September. July and August are the busiest months, during which the beach water temperature can reach a pleasant 20 degrees Celsius, a true rarity on the Canadian east coast.
