Twillingate
Twillingate, historically a prominent fishing and sealing port, sits on the easy on the eye Notre Dame Bay in northeastern Newfoundland. Connected to the mainland by a series of engineered causeways, this outport community embraces its deep-rooted maritime heritage. Officially dubbed the 'Iceberg Capital of the World,' the town's coastal waters are part of Iceberg Alley, where massive glacial fragments drift southward from Greenland each spring. The Long Point Lighthouse, built in 1876 on a 90-meter cliff, provides an unparalleled vantage point for spotting these icebergs, as well as humpback and orca whales. The local museum and the Auk Island Winery, which uniquely produces wine from iceberg water and local berries, are key cultural stops. Traditional Jigs' dinner and fresh Atlantic seafood dominate the local restaurant menus. The town is situated roughly 100 kilometers north of the town of Gander. The peak season for iceberg viewing is from late May to early July, while August brings the popular Fish, Fun and Folk Festival.
