Fernie
Fernie is a spectacular mountain town located in southeastern British Columbia, surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Rocky Mountains. Unlike many modern resort towns, Fernie has a genuine historic downtown full of brick and stone buildings dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These pleasant streets now host an array of boutique shops, cozy cafes, and excellent restaurants, giving the town a distinct cultural and historic vibe. The area is legendary among skiers and snowboarders for the Fernie Factor, a weather phenomenon that drops massive amounts of dry, light powder snow on the nearby Fernie Alpine Resort. During the summer, the Elk River becomes a top destination for world-class fly fishing, particularly for cutthroat trout, while the extensive trail networks invite hikers and mountain bikers to explore the lush forests. Fernie is easily accessible via Highway 3 (the Crowsnest Highway), located near the Alberta border. Winter is an absolute must for snow sports lovers, while summer features warm days first-rate for river activities and mountain exploration.
