Banff / Canmore
Banff and neighboring Canmore are the most renowned hubs in the Canadian Rockies, acting as gateways to Banff National Park, which was established in 1885. While Banff is a strictly regulated, iconic resort town located right inside the national park, Canmore, just 20 minutes away, is an increasingly popular, more relaxed mountain base dominated by the imposing Three Sisters peaks. The region attracts visitors from all over the world with its dramatic alpine landscapes, turquoise lakes, and rich wildlife. The sight of Mount Rundle and Cascade Mountain towering over Banff's main avenue defines the townscape. Major attractions in the area include Sulphur Mountain, accessible via a gondola, the pretty Johnston Canyon, and the world-famous Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, which owe their lively blue color to glacial rock flour. Wild animals, particularly elk and deer, are frequently seen wandering directly down the streets of the towns. A standout element of the local culinary scene is premium Alberta beef and game meats like bison and venison, served at numerous fine-dining establishments in both towns. Accessing the region is straightforward: Calgary International Airport is located 130 kilometers to the east, from which the mountains can be reached via the Trans-Canada Highway in just under a 90-minute scenic drive. Summer, from July to early September, is the busiest period when the glacial lakes are fully thawed and hiking trails are clear, though securing a parking spot becomes a significant challenge. The winter season, from December through April, features three world-class ski resorts (the Big3) featuring deep powder snow. The autumn months, especially late September, are incredibly popular among photographers and hikers due to the brilliant golden colors of the turning larch trees.
