Amphitrite Point Lighthouse
Amphitrite Point Lighthouse is a picturesque and fully active navigational beacon located on the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. Situated near the coastal community of Ucluelet, the lighthouse importantly marks the treacherous entrance to Barkley Sound. The current sturdy concrete structure was erected around 1915 to withstand the extreme coastal weather, replacing an earlier wooden tower that was completely destroyed by ferocious Pacific storms.
The location is highly celebrated for its dramatic, untamed coastal scenery. The scenic grounds around the lighthouse serve as an exceptional vantage point for watching massive ocean swells crash heavily against the rocky shoreline. During the winter months, the area transforms into a premier destination for "storm watching," drawing numerous visitors who want to witness the awe-inspiring power of nature in a safe, accessible environment.
The lighthouse is a prominent and beloved highlight along the famed Wild Pacific Trail. This beautifully maintained coastal pathway wraps directly around the point and past the lighthouse, offering hikers uninterrupted views of the open ocean, ancient temperate rainforests, and a diverse range of coastal wildlife. Lucky visitors often spot bald eagles soaring overhead and migrating gray whales passing by in the distance.
