Léo Lowlands (Burkina Faso)

Weather…

The Léo Lowlands are located in the south of Burkina Faso in the Sissili province, directly on the border with Ghana. The region is characterized by a gentle, flat topography that is part of the Sissili River basin. With an annual rainfall of about 1000 mm, the area belongs to the more humid Sudanian zone and is characterized by extensive forest savannas with high populations of Karité (shea) trees. Léo is the national center for shea butter production, giving the region high economic importance. The fertile soils also allow for the successful cultivation of maize, tubers such as yams, and various types of fruit. Historically, the region was an important point for cultural exchange between the Mossi peoples of the north and the forest peoples of present-day Ghana. The relief features good conditions for large-scale agriculture and sustainable forestry use. During the rainy season, the lowlands transform into a lush, green landscape rich in biodiversity.
