Baba Vida Fortress (Bulgaria)

Weather…

Baba Vida is a majestic medieval fortress located on the southern bank of the Danube River in Vidin, northwestern Bulgaria. It stands as the only entirely preserved medieval castle in the country, boasting a formidable defensive system of two concentric walls and a deep moat. Built on the foundations of the ancient Roman fortress of Bononia, the castle reached its prominence during the 14th century as the primary residence of the Vidin Tsars. The architecture is characterized by its nine defensive towers, four of which are fully intact, and its massive stone battlements that offer commanding views over the river toward Romania. Inside, visitors can explore vaulted halls, ancient prisons, and military storerooms that have withstood centuries of warfare. Baba Vida is not only a masterpiece of medieval military architecture but also a powerful symbol of Bulgarian resilience and the city's strategic importance as a riverine stronghold.
