Forte dos Reis Magos
The Forte dos Reis Magos in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, is a star-shaped fortress whose construction began on January 6, 1598, on Epiphany Day. Its strategic location at the mouth of the Potengi River served to protect the territory from French incursions and to secure Portuguese rule. During the Dutch occupation between 1633 and 1654, the fort was known as Fort Keulen before returning to Portuguese control. The architecture is characterized by thick stone walls and bastions that have withstood the tides of the Atlantic for over four centuries. Today, the site houses a museum documenting the region's colonial military history and archaeological findings. It is considered one of Brazil's most significant historical monuments and was listed as national heritage in 1949. The fortress represents early European efforts to secure borders in South America and is a prominent example of 16th-century military defensive architecture.
