Matloutse River

Water temperature…
The Matloutse River is a major ephemeral watercourse in eastern Botswana, serving as a significant left-bank tributary to the Limpopo River. Originating in the sandy plains near Serowe, the river flows eastward for approximately 250 kilometers through the Central District, typically carrying surface water only after heavy summer thunderstorms. Despite its seasonal nature, the river valley is of immense archaeological importance, with sites near the Lepokole Hills yielding evidence of human habitation dating back to the Middle Stone Age and Iron Age. The riparian vegetation is dominated by mopane woodlands and acacia scrub, creating a vital ecological corridor for wildlife such as elephants and leopards in an otherwise semi-arid landscape. Geologically, the riverbed consists of deep alluvial sands overlying ancient Precambrian basement rocks, which have been instrumental in the transport of indicator minerals for diamond exploration. For local pastoralists, the river remains a lifeline, as subsurface water trapped in the sand is accessed through traditional hand-dug wells to sustain livestock during the prolonged dry season.
