Speightstown, established around 1630, stands as the second-oldest settlement in Barbados and retains a distinct colonial character that sets it apart from the busier capital. Historically dubbed 'Little Bristol,' the town maintained exclusive trading rights with the English port of Bristol, serving as a primary hub for the export of sugar and tobacco. The historic district is defined by its 17th and 18th-century coral stone architecture, featuring many two-story buildings with overhanging balconies designed to provide shade for pedestrians. During the 19th century, Speightstown also developed into a significant center for the regional whaling industry, adding another layer to its maritime heritage. Current-day Speightstown is a blend of quiet tradition and modern revitalization, with sites like Arlington House Museum offering immersive exhibits on plantation life and colonial trade. The waterfront remains a focal point, where old schooner docks have transitioned into scenic spots for viewing the Caribbean sunset.
