Bridgetown Jewish Cemetery (Barbados)

Weather…

Situated in the historic heart of Bridgetown, this cemetery is an integral part of the Nidhe Israel Synagogue complex, founded in 1654 by Sephardic Jews who fled persecution in Brazil. As one of the oldest Jewish burial grounds in the Americas, it features gravestones with inscriptions in Hebrew, Portuguese, and English, documenting the community's diverse heritage. Many of the ornate monuments are decorated with traditional Sephardic motifs, reflecting the cultural influence of the community on the island's early development. The site was meticulously restored in 2011 and is now a key component of the Bridgetown UNESCO World Heritage area. Visitors can also see the ancient mikvah (ritual bath) located on the grounds, which is fed by a natural spring and remains one of the oldest preserved examples in the Western Hemisphere.
