Nidhe Israel Synagogue (Barbados)

Weather…

The Nidhe Israel Synagogue in Bridgetown stands as a monumental testament to Jewish history in the Caribbean. Founded in 1654 by Sephardic Jews who fled the Portuguese Inquisition in Brazil, it was one of the first synagogues established in the New World. The original structure was nearly destroyed by the devastating hurricane of 1831 but was faithfully rebuilt in 1833, blending Gothic features with classical Caribbean architectural styles. A highlight of the grounds is the historic mikvah, a 17th-century ritual bath discovered during an archaeological excavation in 2008. It is one of the oldest and most significant structures of its kind in the Americas, fed by a natural spring. The adjacent cemetery, with gravestones dating back to the 1660s, underscores the deep historical roots of the Jewish community on the island. Today, the site includes a modern museum that tells the story of the Jewish settlers and their lasting impact on Barbadian society.
