Bekh Hermitage
The Bekh Hermitage is an isolated and ancient monastic complex situated on the forested eastern slopes of Mount Khustup in the Syunik Province of Armenia, near the city of Kapan. Dating back to the 10th and 11th centuries, it served as a secluded spiritual retreat for monks seeking extreme isolation and a deep connection with nature away from the bustling settlements.
Over the centuries, the hermitage was abandoned and slowly reclaimed by the surrounding dense forest, lying hidden from the modern world for a very long time. The ruins were rediscovered in recent decades, revealing the remains of an ancient church, a refectory, defensive walls, and various utility structures built from rough-hewn basalt stones.
Today, the site is a fascinating destination for adventurous hikers and history enthusiasts. Reaching the hermitage requires navigating a challenging trail through thick woodlands, but visitors are rewarded with a profound sense of tranquility and a unique glimpse into medieval Armenian monastic life amidst breathtaking natural scenery.
