Founded in 1638, Portsmouth is the second-oldest town in Rhode Island. It covers the northern part of Aquidneck Island and several smaller islands in Narragansett Bay. The town provides a characterful mix of history and coastal scenery. Island Park Beach is a favorite local gathering spot with a relaxed vibe, while Grimmells Beach and Teddy Beach offer smaller, quieter stretches for waterfront strolls. for travelers is the Green Animals Topiary Garden, the oldest and most northern topiary garden in the U.S., featuring over 80 impressive animal figures sculpted from plants. Portsmouth is also a hub for sailing, featuring numerous marinas and views of the Sakonnet River. The town has preserved much of its rural character, with open spaces and vineyards like Newport Vineyards, which lies partly within Portsmouth territory. Its proximity to Newport makes it a well-suited, quieter base for exploring the region.
