Mount Desert Island, located off the deeply rugged coast of Maine, is the absolute largest island in New England and a memorable masterpiece of glacial geology. The island's dramatic topography was powerfully carved by massive, mile-thick ice sheets during the last Ice Age, resulting in deep, elongated lakes, massive rounded mountains, and a spectacular, fjord-like indentation known as Somes Sound. It is predominantly home to Acadia National Park, which protects highly pristine spruce-fir forests and the prominent Cadillac Mountain, the absolute highest peak on the eastern seaboard of the United States. The island's remarkably diverse ecosystems attract massive numbers of visitors who explore its historic carriage roads and observe abundant wildlife.
