Tucson, the second-largest city in Arizona, is located in a valley surrounded by five mountain ranges. The city's rich history spans over 4,000 years of continuous settlement. The modern city was founded in 1775 as a Spanish military fort, the Presidio San Agustín del Tucsón. After the Gadsden Purchase in 1853, Tucson became part of the United States. The city is renowned for its hot desert climate and its unique Sonoran Desert landscape, symbolized by the saguaro cactus. Saguaro National Park, which flanks the city, protects these iconic plants. Tucson is a major center for astronomy, owing to its clear skies and strict light-pollution ordinances; the Kitt Peak National Observatory is one of many astronomical facilities nearby. The University of Arizona, founded in 1885, is a key driver of the city's economy and culture. In 2015, Tucson was designated by UNESCO as the first 'City of Gastronomy' in the U.S., in recognition of its 4,000-year agricultural history. Its architecture is a blend of Spanish Colonial, Mission Revival, and contemporary styles.
