Sembawang Naval Base (Singapore)

Weather…

Sembawang Naval Base, formerly known as HMS Sultan, was a cornerstone of British naval strategy in the Far East throughout much of the 20th century. Construction began in the 1920s and was officially completed in 1938, designed to serve as a 'Gibraltar of the East' to secure British interests in the Pacific. A key feature of the base was the King George VI Graving Dock, which was the largest dry dock in the world at the time of its opening. During World War II, the base fell to the Japanese in 1942 but was returned to British control following the Japanese surrender in 1945. After the withdrawal of British forces in 1971, the facilities were handed over to the Singapore government, evolving into the Sembawang Shipyard. The surrounding residential areas still feature many historic 'Black and White' colonial houses built for naval officers. Today, it continues to be an important maritime industrial site and maintains facilities used by visiting international navies.
