Metropolitan Cathedral (Romania)

Weather…

The Metropolitan Cathedral in Iași is the largest Orthodox church in Romania and a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture. Constructed between 1833 and 1887, it stands on the site of two older churches and serves as the seat of the Archbishop of Iași and Metropolitan of Moldavia and Bukovina. The architectural design was initially drafted by Gustav Freywald and Bucher, later completed under the direction of the renowned Romanian architect Alexandru Orăscu. The cathedral's interior is decorated with magnificent frescoes by the celebrated painter Gheorghe Tattarescu, executed in a style inspired by the Italian Renaissance. It is most famous for housing the relics of Saint Parascheva, the patron saint of Moldavia, which were brought to Iași in the 17th century. Every October, the cathedral becomes the destination of the largest religious pilgrimage in Southeastern Europe, drawing hundreds of thousands of believers. The exterior is characterized by four massive corner towers and a grand entrance with Corinthian columns, dominating the central landscape of Iași. As a national historical monument, the Metropolitan Cathedral is a symbol of Romanian spiritual identity and a key landmark for visitors exploring the historic capital of Moldavia.
