Independence Monument Tulcea (Romania)

Weather…

The Independence Monument in Tulcea stands prominently on Hora Hill, commemorating the victory in the War of Independence (1877-1878) and the reunification of Dobruja with Romania. The foundation stone was laid on October 17, 1879, in the presence of King Carol I, but the initial construction was only completed in 1899. The monument has faced destruction twice: first in 1916 by Bulgarian and German troops during World War I, and later due to neglect and seismic damage. The current 22-meter-high granite obelisk was rebuilt in 1977 to mark the centennial of Romania's independence, following the original plans. It features two significant bronze sculptures: an infantryman (dorobanț) holding a rifle and an eagle with spread wings, symbolizing victory and freedom. Situated in a park that also houses the ruins of the ancient fortress of Aegyssus, the site features a panoramic view over the city and the Danube Delta. It serves as a major landmark for national ceremonies and a testament to the region's historical transformation.
