- If attending the famous Goroka Show in September, you must book your flights and accommodation many months in advance.
- Always hire a trusted local guide through your guesthouse for any trips into the surrounding tribal villages.
- Cash is king. Carry plenty of Kina in smaller denominations, as card facilities are extremely rare outside major hotels.

Goroka is the bustling and culturally rich capital of the Eastern Highlands Province in Papua New Guinea. Situated at an altitude of around 1,600 meters, the town enjoys a wonderfully mild, spring-like climate year-round, which is a refreshing contrast to the humid coastal areas of the country. The surrounding dramatic landscape consists of lush green valleys, mist-covered mountains, and incredibly fertile volcanic soils. The town is globally celebrated as the beating heart of Papua New Guinea's coffee industry. Visitors can tour local coffee plantations, learning about the cultivation and roasting processes of some of the world's finest organic beans. Goroka is perhaps most famous for the spectacular Goroka Show, an incredible annual cultural festival where dozens of indigenous tribes, including the iconic Asaro Mudmen, gather for animated sing-sings, drumming, and traditional dances. While Goroka is deeply inland and lacks beaches, the spectacular highland scenery has outstanding opportunities for trekking, rare bird watching, and visiting remote traditional villages. The town's local markets are lively centers of commerce where highlanders trade fresh vegetables and beautiful artisanal crafts. Access is primarily through the Goroka Airport, which connects directly to the capital, Port Moresby.
