Fuerte Santiago (Panama)

Weather…

Fort Santiago de la Gloria is one of the earliest and most strategically significant defenses in Portobelo. Located on the western side of the bay, it was designed to prevent enemy ships from entering the harbor. The fort is built on two levels: a lower battery at water level and an upper level with barracks and administrative buildings. It played a heroic role in many battles, including the defense against the privateer William Parker in 1602. The ruins are remarkably well-preserved, with the original stone staircases and thick defensive walls still intact. Visiting Fort Santiago allows one to appreciate the immense effort the Spanish Empire put into securing the Panama isthmus as its most vital lifeline.
