Benin City Walls (Nigeria)

Weather…

The Benin City Walls, located in present-day Edo State, are among the most remarkable feats of pre-colonial African engineering. These massive earthworks, consisting of a combination of ramparts and moats, once enclosed the capital of the powerful Kingdom of Benin. It is estimated that the entire network of walls in the region stretched for over 16,000 kilometers, making it one of the largest man-made structures on Earth prior to the industrial age. Construction is believed to have started around the 9th century, reaching its zenith in the 15th century under the reign of Oba Ewuare the Great. The walls served as a formidable defense mechanism and a symbol of the king's authority and the empire's sophisticated social hierarchy. Tragically, a significant portion of the walls was decimated during the British Punitive Expedition of 1897. Today, surviving fragments are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage tentative site, representing the advanced mathematical planning and organizational skills of the Edo people.
