Ruins of León Viejo (Nicaragua)

Weather…

The ruins of León Viejo represent the original site of the city of León, founded in 1524 by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba. Due to its precarious location near the Momotombo volcano and frequent seismic activity, the settlement was abandoned in 1610 following a major eruption. The residents chose to relocate the city to its current position, leaving the old structures to be preserved under volcanic ash and sediment for centuries. The site was rediscovered in 1967 by archaeologists from the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua. Today, the ruins provide an exceptional look into early Spanish colonial town planning and social hierarchy during the 16th century. In 2000, UNESCO designated the site as a World Heritage landmark, recognizing it as one of the oldest Spanish colonial settlements in the Americas. Visitors can walk among the foundations of the cathedral, the monastery, and the governor's house while viewing the imposing Momotombo volcano nearby.
