La Roque Escarpment (Monaco)

Weather…

The Escarpement de la Roque, better known as the Rock of Monaco (Le Rocher), is an impressive limestone monolith rising 62 meters above the Mediterranean Sea. This steep relief formed the historical basis for the founding of the Principality, as its vertical walls provided a natural fortress. Geologically, the rock consists of compact Tithonian limestone shaped by marine erosion and tectonic uplift. Atop its summit lies the old town (Monaco-Ville) with the Prince's Palace, whose architecture closely follows the contours of the plateau. The relief is characterized by numerous caves and fissures within the rock, some of which were used historically as storage rooms or escape routes. The seaward cliffs are an important habitat for protected bird species and Mediterranean rock vegetation.
