Guadalajara Cathedral (Mexico)

Weather…

Guadalajara Cathedral, officially the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, is the most iconic structure in the capital of Jalisco. Construction began in 1561 and was overseen by architect Martín Casillas, with the building being consecrated in 1618. Its most famous feature is the pair of yellow-tiled Neo-Gothic spires, which were added in 1854 to replace the original towers that collapsed during a massive earthquake. The interior of the cathedral is a magnificent blend of Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles, housing ten ornate altars gifted by various European monarchs. One of the most visited sites within the church is the reliquary of Saint Inocencia, a young Roman martyr whose wax figure is preserved in a glass case. Beyond its spiritual significance, the cathedral serves as a museum of colonial art and architecture, featuring a massive pipe organ and grand chapels that reflect the cultural wealth of Guadalajara through the centuries.
