Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos is located halfway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, yet it has managed to maintain a completely different atmosphere. As a peaceful fishing village with a bohemian touch, it is the great spot for travelers seeking a slower pace of life. The town’s most iconic landmark is the 'Faro Inclinado,' a leaning lighthouse that survived a major hurricane and remains slanted on the beach today. The waters directly off the coast are part of the Puerto Morelos National Marine Park. Because the barrier reef is exceptionally close to the shore here, it acts as a natural breakwater, keeping the waters calm and shallow. This makes it one of the best spots in the region for snorkeling, where you can see healthy coral formations, rays, and sea turtles. Local boat cooperatives offer short trips to the most pristine parts of the reef. Another major draw is the 'Ruta de los Cenotes' (Cenote Route), a road leading inland that provides access to dozens of unique freshwater sinkholes hidden in the jungle. The town is also home to the Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marín Botanical Garden, one of the largest in Mexico, where you can see local flora and even wild spider monkeys. The town square remains the heart of the community, hosting markets and live music. The local food scene is excellent, ranging from upscale seafood restaurants to simple taco stands. The best time to visit is from December to April when the humidity is low. Puerto Morelos is a well-suited base for exploring the Riviera Maya while enjoying an authentic, small-town Mexican vibe.
