Hospicio Cabañas
The Hospicio Cabañas in Guadalajara was founded at the end of the 18th century by Bishop Juan Cruz Ruiz de Cabañas and stands as one of the most significant neoclassical structures in Mexico. Designed by the renowned architect Manuel Tolsá, the complex was intended to serve as an orphanage, hospital, and almshouse, with construction largely completed by 1810. The building is characterized by its 23 internal courtyards and elegant colonnades, which provided a dignified living space for the marginalized population. Between 1937 and 1939, the Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco painted 57 monumental frescoes within the chapel, depicting scenes of Mexican history and human struggle. The central piece, "The Man of Fire," is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Mexican muralism. Since 1980, the site has functioned as a cultural institute and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.
