Kufra Orchards (Libya)

Weather…

The Kufra oases in southeastern Libya represent one of the most ambitious agricultural projects in the Sahara Desert. Since the 1970s, the region has tapped into the fossil water of the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer to conduct large-scale center-pivot irrigation in one of the world's most arid environments. Kufra is characterized by massive circular fields, which can reach up to one kilometer in diameter, creating distinct green patterns visible from space. These desert circles primarily produce wheat, alfalfa, and fruit trees, aimed at supporting the nation's food self-sufficiency goals. Despite technological achievements, the project faces significant ecological challenges due to declining groundwater levels. Historically, Kufra served as a strategic stop for caravans and was a spiritual center for the Senussi order. Today, the orchards and fields symbolize the struggle against desertification and provide essential employment in the remote region. Logistics for transporting produce to coastal cities rely on long desert tracks and air freight.
