Satpayev is an industrial city in central Kazakhstan, located within the Ulytau Region and situated very close to the city of Jezkazgan. The settlement was founded in 1954 under the name Nikolsky to house workers for the surrounding copper mines and was granted city status in 1973. In 1990, it was renamed in honor of Kanysh Satpayev, a distinguished Kazakh geologist and the first president of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR. The city's economy is almost entirely centered on copper mining, with the mines of the Kazakhmys company forming the backbone of local employment. The architecture is typical of a Soviet planned city, featuring functional residential blocks and extensive industrial zones. Despite the demanding conditions of heavy industry, the city takes pride in its cultural heritage and its historical connection to science. Geographically, Satpayev is positioned in the vast steppes of central Kazakhstan, characterized by a sharp and extreme continental climate.
