Kyzylorda, located on the lower reaches of the Syr Darya River in southern Kazakhstan, has a rich and turbulent history. The city was founded in 1820 as the Kokand fortress of Ak-Mechet and underwent several changes in name and status over time. From 1925 to 1929, Kyzylorda served as the first capital of the Kazakh Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic before the administrative center was moved to Almaty. Today, the region is primarily known for its rice production, made possible by the extensive irrigation systems of the Syr Darya. Geographically, the city sits on the edge of the Kyzylkum Desert, resulting in an extreme continental and arid climate. The proximity to the Baikonur Cosmodrome gives the region strategic importance in space exploration. Kyzylorda is also a significant hub for oil and gas extraction in southern Kazakhstan.
