Oral, also known as Uralsk, is situated at the confluence of the Ural and Chagan rivers in northwestern Kazakhstan. Founded in 1613 by Yaik Cossacks, it is considered one of the oldest cities in the country. Oral has a rich military history and served as a focal point during the Pugachev Rebellion in the 18th century. Geographically, the city lies on the easternmost edge of Europe, as the Ural River defines the border with Asia. The architecture in the historical center is characterized by neoclassical buildings from the Tsarist era, including the famous Christ the Saviour Cathedral. Economically, the region currently benefits from significant natural gas fields like Karachaganak, one of the largest in the world.
