Kumano is a place where nature and spirituality merge in a unique way. The city is home to Odomari Beach (大泊海水浴場), a scenic bay with clear water handy for swimming and snorkeling, framed by forested mountains. This beach has a tranquil atmosphere for relaxation compared to the wilder coastal sections of the region. Among the most impressive attractions is Onigajo ('The Ogre's Castle'), a series of bizarre rock formations shaped by wave erosion along the coast, which are also part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Another spiritual highlight is Hana-no-Iwaya Shrine, considered the oldest shrine in Japan, located at a massive rock wall. Every year in August, the Kumano Fireworks display takes place here, one of Japan's most spectacular fireworks festivals, illuminating the entire bay. The Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails lead directly through the city area, offering wide-open views to pilgrims. In the local cuisine, fresh tuna plays a central role, as does 'Sanma-zushi' (saury sushi). Kumano is the gateway to the sacred sites of the Kii Mountains and provides a deep, almost mystical connection to early Japanese history and nature mythology.
