Jam Gadang
Jam Gadang is a historical clock tower in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, and serves as the city's most prominent landmark. The tower was built in 1926 during the Dutch colonial era as a gift from the Queen to the city secretary. The word 'Gadang' means 'big' in the Minangkabau language, referring to the tower's monumental stature. A unique architectural feature is its roof, which has been changed three times throughout history: from a European spire to a Shinto shrine shape during the Japanese occupation, and finally to its current traditional Minangkabau 'Bagonjong' style. The clock mechanism was manufactured by the Vortmann company in Germany and is technically identical to the one used in London's Big Ben. A notable curiosity is the clock face, where the Roman numeral four is written as 'IIII' instead of 'IV'. The square surrounding the tower is a central meeting point for both tourists and locals, offering views of the nearby Marapi and Singgalang mountains.
