The Sudirman Range, also known as the Dugunduguoo, is a prominent mountain chain within the Maoke Mountains of Papua, Indonesia. It contains the highest peak in Oceania, Puncak Jaya (Carstensz Pyramid), which rises to 4,884 meters above sea level. This range is globally significant for housing rare tropical glaciers, which are unfortunately retreating rapidly due to rising global temperatures. A large portion of the range is protected within Lorentz National Park, the largest national park in Southeast Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area is also home to the massive Grasberg Mine, one of the world's largest gold and copper operations, creating a complex dynamic between economic interests and environmental conservation. Indigenous peoples, such as the Amungme and Dani, have lived in these highlands for millennia, regarding the high peaks as sacred sites. The range's extreme vertical relief supports a transition of ecosystems from lowland rainforests to sub-alpine and alpine environments.

Getting there

Access to the Sudirman Range is highly restricted and typically begins with flights to Timika or Nabire in Papua. From there, expeditions require chartered helicopters or grueling multi-day treks guided by specialized, permitted operators.

Best season

Due to its equatorial location and extreme elevation, the weather is consistently wet and cold year-round. However, expeditions often target periods between April and November in hopes of marginally lower precipitation levels.

The terrain is incredibly rugged, transitioning from dense, impenetrable lowland rainforests to sheer limestone cliffs and equatorial glaciers. Navigating this range involves technical alpine climbing and slogging through thick mud in the lower valleys.

What to bring

Complete mountaineering equipment, including ropes, crampons, and ice axes, is mandatory for reaching higher elevations. High-quality waterproof layers and heavy-duty trekking boots are essential for surviving the continuous rain and harsh conditions.

As this is a remote wilderness area accessible only by air or deep jungle trekking, there are no vehicle facilities of any kind. Expeditions manage all logistical drop-offs at the designated base towns before the trek begins.
