Banda Neira Forts (Indonesia)

Weather…

Banda Neira, a tiny island in the remote Maluku archipelago, was once the most contested piece of real estate on Earth. As the world's only source of nutmeg, it was the site of brutal colonial wars and the infamous 1621 massacre by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The island is dominated by the massive Fort Belgica, a pentagonal fortress that still guards the bay, and the older Fort Nassau. Banda Neira is where the Dutch traded the island of Manhattan to the British in 1667 in exchange for the tiny nutmeg island of Run. Today, the forts stand as silent witnesses to the incredible wealth and violence of the spice trade, surrounded by some of the most pristine coral reefs in the world.
