Gunungan Historical Park (Indonesia)

Weather…

Gunongan Historical Park in Banda Aceh is a significant 17th-century monument built during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda of the Aceh Sultanate. The Sultan commissioned this structure, which resembles a stylized flower or a small mountain, as a gift for his wife, a princess from Pahang (Malaysia). Legend says she missed the mountainous terrain of her homeland, so the Gunongan was created as an artificial hill for her private enjoyment and solace. The monument is constructed from white limestone and stands about 9.5 meters high, consisting of three tiers that can be climbed via narrow steps. Its architecture is unique, blending Indian influences with local Islamic styles. Nearby stands the 'Pinto Khop,' an ornate gateway that served as the Queen's private entrance to the river for bathing. Gunongan is one of the few structures from the Aceh Sultanate era that survived various wars and the 2004 tsunami, standing today as a symbol of the kingdom's past grandeur and the cross-cultural ties within the region.
