Metropolitan Cathedral (Guatemala)

Weather…

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago in Guatemala City stands as a monumental landmark of neoclassical architecture in the heart of the capital's historic center. Construction of this imposing structure began in 1782, shortly after the capital was moved from Antigua Guatemala due to devastating earthquakes, and it was officially inaugurated in 1815. The facade is characterized by its massive stone walls and elegant columns, designed to withstand the region's frequent seismic activity, which allowed it to survive major tremors in 1917 and 1976. Inside, the cathedral houses a wealth of colonial religious art, including altarpieces and statues originally brought from the previous cathedral in Antigua. A poignant modern feature consists of the twelve pillars at the entrance, which are inscribed with the names of thousands of people who disappeared during the Guatemalan Civil War. Today, it remains the primary seat of the Catholic Church in the country and a focal point for national religious celebrations and historical remembrance.
