Lanquín is a lively mountain village located in the Alta Verapaz department, serving as the essential hub for travelers headed to Semuc Champey. Surrounded by verdant hills and dramatic landscapes, it has become a popular base for backpackers, offering numerous riverside hostels and eco-lodges. The town's most famous attraction is the Lanquín Caves (Grutas de Lanquín), a massive limestone cave system situated just on the outskirts of the village. A unique natural spectacle occurs every evening at dusk when thousands of bats emerge from the cave entrance in a massive cloud to hunt. The Lanquín River, which flows directly from a cave, is first-rate for a refreshing swim or a relaxed tubing trip down the gentle currents.
