💡 Tips

  • Ateni Beach is actually divided into a smaller, protected cove and a larger, windier stretch; choose according to the weather.
  • The dirt road down to the beaches can be bumpy, so drive a suitable vehicle.
  • Bring your own shade and water, as amenities are sparse.
  • Winds (Meltemi) can be strong in August, making it convenient for windsurfing but less for calm swimming.

Gides is a small, idyllic settlement on the Cycladic island of Andros, known primarily for its untouched nature and tranquility. Located away from the major tourist flows, Gides has an authentic Greek island experience. The absolute highlight of the region is Ateni Beach (Ατένι). More precisely, it consists of two neighboring bays: a smaller, wind-sheltered bay handy for families, and a larger bay popular with surfers and nature lovers. The water here is exceptionally clear and shimmers in various shades of turquoise, while the fine sand invites you to linger. The landscape around Gides is characterized by the typical dry-stone walls of the Cyclades and surprisingly green vegetation for this island group. Andros is known for its numerous springs and hiking trails, and Gides also provides excellent opportunities to explore the island on foot. Hiking paths lead through olive groves and repeatedly offer wide-open views of the Aegean Sea. The architecture in the village is simple and traditional, with whitewashed houses and blue windows that harmonize perfectly with the surroundings. Since there are few tourist facilities in Gides, the place preserves its original charm. Visitors should prepare for self-catering or visiting small, local taverns in the vicinity. The local cuisine of Andros is famous for 'Froutalia', a special omelet with potatoes and local sausages. The island's honey and traditional sweets are also a must. Getting to Gides is best by rental car from the port town of Gavrio. The road leads through the mountainous hinterland of the island and features spectacular panoramas. Gides is the excellent place for travelers looking for the wildness of the Cyclades and solitude at one of the island's most beautiful beaches.
