Narva Alexander's Cathedral (Estonia)

Weather…

Narva Alexander's Cathedral, officially referred to as Narva Alexander's Great Church (Narva Aleksandri Suurkirik), is a monumental Lutheran church reflecting the industrial prosperity of late 19th-century Estonia. Designed by architect Otto Pius Hippius and built between 1881 and 1884, it was primarily established to serve the thousands of workers at the Kreenholm Manufacturing Company. Upon completion, it stood as the largest church building in Estonia and Livonia, boasting a capacity to hold up to 5,000 worshippers. The cathedral was dedicated to Tsar Alexander II, who was assassinated shortly before the construction began. The structure suffered catastrophic damage during World War II; specifically, in 1944, heavy shelling destroyed its iconic bell tower and much of the interior. After decades of use as a warehouse during the Soviet era, extensive restoration efforts in the 21st century have seen the 60.7-meter-high tower rebuilt and the sanctuary partially restored. Currently, the cathedral functions as a unique venue for concerts and multimedia art installations, featuring a permanent video projection on its vaulted ceilings. Its historicist style with Neo-Romanesque elements makes it one of the most significant landmarks in the border city of Narva.
