Church of Regina Angelorum (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

The Church of Regina Angelorum is an outstanding example of 16th-century sacred architecture in Santo Domingo. It belonged to the first convent for women in the New World, founded in 1564 by the Dominican nuns. The church's architecture features a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles, with massive stone walls and elegant vaults that have survived through the centuries. Particularly notable is the main nave with its intricate ceiling construction and the historical tombs, including that of the Baron of Carlowitz. During the French occupation in the early 19th century, the convent was secularized, but the church remained an important religious center. Extensive restoration in the 20th century brought back the original splendor of its facade and interiors. As part of the UNESCO-protected Colonial City, Regina Angelorum is a place of silence and reflection, reflecting the long tradition of monastic life in the Americas.
