Gate of Mercy (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

The Gate of Mercy (Puerta de la Misericordia) is a historic city gate in Santo Domingo and a foundational site for Dominican patriotism. Originally known as Puerta de Santiago or Puerta Grande, it was part of the city's first defensive wall system constructed in the 16th century to repel pirate raids. Its current name was adopted following the catastrophic earthquake of 1842, when citizens gathered here to seek divine mercy and shelter. However, its most profound historical significance occurred on the night of February 27, 1844. At this very spot, Matías Ramón Mella fired the famous 'trabucazo' (blunderbuss shot) that signaled the start of the War of Independence against Haitian rule. That night, the Dominican flag was raised for the first time, and the birth of the new Republic was proclaimed. Built of robust masonry and coralline limestone, the gate stands as an enduring symbol of liberty and bravery. It remains a central site for national celebrations, honoring the members of the secret society La Trinitaria who fought for the nation's sovereignty.
